In a hyper-competitive world like fashion, one of the best way to emerge for young designers is that of partecipating to important fashion contests. For them these are occasions to present their collections, to show their creative talent, to be under the spotlight. For headhunters and talent scouts, they are opportunity to find some rare pearls, while for Altaroma they are the way to push ahead the great heritage of Made in Italy.
ALTAROMA is in effect a platform for launching and enhancing young fashion designers and emerging brands through many inititives. That’s why I love so much this event. Two times a year, Rome becomes the ideal scenery to discover and meet many new talents.
Besides the traditional fashion week schedule with shows, exhibitions and in-town events, one of the most interestisting features of Altaroma is exactly its propensions to suppport the work of fashion schools and promising designers through various fashion competitions it organizes or hosts. In the last edition of July in particular there where four very important fashion contests, that brought on catwalk some of the most relevant up-and-coming brands from Italy and from international fashion schools.

WHO IS ON NEXT?
Who will be the next designers who can have the chance to become big names? Who are capable to arouse the interest of international fashion magazines? “Who Is On Next?” is something more than a simple contest. Organized by Altaroma with the collaboration of Vogue Italia, this competition is a real scouting project that wants to help young designers of womenswear and accessories with a financial support, great visibility and the chance to get in touch with important opinion learders, fashion journalists and professionals.

That’s why it’s considered one of the most important springboards for emerging brands which have already some collections and a distribution line, but that need a further support and especially great visibility with mass media. This year the jury of experts of “Who Is On Next?” selected 9 finalists, 5 for the womenswear and 4 for accessories, all excellent in terms of style and high quality products.

The triumph of FEDERICO CINA was decided unanimously by the jury and celebrated by long applauses and acclamations by the public (including me!) during the contest’s final fashion show. He was the winner of the “Franca Sozzani Price” and of the “Pitti Tutoring & Consultin Prize”. Federico was rewarded for his great capacity of translating the tradition of Italian craftsmanship through a complex and very personal storytelling. Well, his collection, the music he chose, the colors, the contrasts between modernity and nostalgia, everything in his show was impregnated of a sweet and strong greatness. Something that goes beyond the rationality, because he was for real able to touch the emotional cords of our heart.

Among the other finalists for ready-to-wear, I’d like to speak also about BAV TAILOR, a designer of sustainable fashion who I’m following for some time. The collection seen at Altaroma was feminine and sophisticated, with a beautiful palette of pure colors and delicate sinuous details that moves the silhouette.

Among the finalists for the accessories category I was impressed by the evolution of the bags collection of the brand IURI, designed by Jure Stropnik, that becomes more rich in terms of models and decidedly captivating for the choice of colors and especially for the modern lines. I fell in love with his cargo-shaped small bags and the cilinder bucket bags.

While was a real discovery the amazing contemporary jewelry collection by NAHIOT HERNANDEZ. Jewels that mix concrete and resin with metals, natural inspired shapes and unusual details. Real sculptures to wear that are also incredibly light, despite their big dimensions and the raw aspect of the materials.

XXIX CONCORSO NAZIONALE PROFESSIONE MODA GIOVANI STILISTI
The contest dedicated to the students of the best Italian fashion schools is organized by RMI Ricerca Moda Innovazione and CNA Federmoda in collaboration with Altaroma and The One Milano. All these institutions and many partners are working together to support young designers through a contest that, differently from many others, enhances different sectors of fashion industry, from fur to underwear and swimwear or accessories.

The students who partecipates for the various categories have the chance to win prestigious scholarships and internships, getting in touch with the working wolrd through real and interesting opportunities.

This year the absolut winner was Marco Anzil, from Accademia Costume e Moda of Rome, with his two contemporary Barbarian warrior girls, who won the “Medal of the President of the Republic”, a Kaledo software licence by Lectra, the partecipation to the Mozambique Fashion Week 2019 and to Expotextile Peru 2019.

For the category women’s clothing the winner was Teresa Paterlini from Politecnico Milano, with 2 feminine thickly draped outfits, while the other students were Daniele Adami from Istituto Modartech, Eleonora Barcaroli from IED Rome, Elena Cingolani from Next Fashion School Ancona (who won the special prize for the best modelling project), Salvatore Pecora from Harim Accademia Euromediterranea Catania, Renato De Simone from Accademia Costume e Moda Rome (winner of the special prize by Lectra) and Martina Coppolella from CNA Federmoda Ferrara.

The prize for the category childrenwear clothing was given to Barbara Miele from Accademia di Belle Arti Bologna, who presented two little princesses wearing shaded pastel colors. On catwalk also the creations by Debora Del Piano and Giorgia Presta, both from Istituto Moda Burgo Modena, Luca Mattioli from Istituto Bernardino di Betto in Perugia.

The winner of the category accessories and shoes was Claudia Mariani, student of IED Rome, for her modern and functional approach to design. In the same category there were also Marianna Achilli and Michela Riccucci, both from Accademia Costume e Moda in Rome.

For the category lingerie and swimwear the winner was Waleska Prieto, from Istituto di Moda Burgo Milano, who brought on catwalk a bold 80s style sexy woman in black and gold. In the same category were also the creations by Maria Valentina Dumapay from Istituto Italiano Moda in Rome, Valentina Famularo from Accademia Altieri, Simona Lollino from Pianeta Formazione Pescara, Sofia Masciotta and Caterina Theodoli, both from Accademia Costume e Moda Rome.

For the knitwear the winner was Giovanni Bartolini from Politecnico Milano, who created soft three-dimensional structures and interesting textures. For the same category we’ve seen on runway also Filippo Alimonti from Accademia Costume e Moda Rome, Ilaria Cerioli from Istituto Secoli Milano, Giada Iannetta from Pianeta Formazione Pescara, Davide Mazzaglia from Harim Accademia Euromediterranea Catania and Gabriele Proietti from Accademia Altieri in Rome.

For the category fur the winner was Marco Anzil, while Chiara Gullo from Accademia Koefia, who proposed two luxurious and very modern way to use fur, playing with colors and optical effects, won the special prize “The One Milano”. Together with them, there where also Edoardo Battellini from Istituto Bernardino di Betto in Perugia, Giada Iannetta from Pianeta Formazione Pescara and Monhui Zhang from IIS Caterina da Siena Milano (winner of the special prize as youngest finalist).

Another very important feature of this competition is the collaboration with “Fashion from the World – International Young Designers Selection”, which gives the possibilities to new talents coming from emerging countries to showcase their collection in the prestigious context of Altaroma.

So we had the occasion to admire the beautiful creations by Pretü, Nadia Saete and Ricardina Adelino from Mozambique Fashion Week, Rahma Saidana from the Festival des Jeunes Créateurs de Moda of Tunis and Ricardo Quispe from Expotextile Peru.

REBELPIN 2019 – FASHION AWARD BY ACTE
The international vocation of Altaroma is clear also in the will of bringing on catwalk also students and young fashion designers coming from other countries. The fashion competition “Rebelpin 2019 – Fashion Award by ACTE” wanted to celebrate the great creativity and experimental approach of fashion designers coming from Europe.

Aleksandra Jendryka, who studied at University of Art and Design in Poland and at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, takes inspiration from the Chinese culture revisited with an avant-garde and sustainable approach. Carolina Rönnberg is the fashion designer behind the label Wilhja, who presented at Altaroma a stunning experimental and decidedly eye-catching capsule collection of rich fur-effect organza dresses.

Chelsea Flinn is graduated in BA Fashion Design at University of Huddersfield and presented an experimental menswear collection made of laser-cutting and three-dimesnsional elements that mix shapes taken from streetwear, workwear and more sentimental concepts.

Eli Del Oro, from Spain, is a visionary fashion and textile designer, an illustrator and a real artist, who approach to fashion as an artistic gesture rich of meanings. His handmade outfits were absolutely surprising and impressive, bold and magnificently baroque. Esther Carril studied at LCI Barcelona Felicitad Duce and for Rebelpin Award presented three bucolic and languid outfits infused with love for nature and for its differences and imperfections.

Maria Szolc is a fashion design student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, who plays with recycled fabrics and yarns to build new contemporary and urban style pieces, using a zero-waste process. Mónica Águas Gonçalves, who studied at Modatex Lisboa and works as fashion designer for many brands and as teacher for many fashion schools, presented her label Casa Grigi, specialized in the innovative use of cork yarns and sustainable fabrics.

Rita Sà is a menswear and womenswear label from Portugal that stands out in the landscape of international emerging brands for the particular choice of making monochromatic collections, featuring clean lines moved by unexpected details. ZER Collection is a future-oriented brand Made in Barcelona designed by Ane Castro and Núria Costa, who produce zero-waste garments thanks to the 3D-printing technology and new textile experimentations, decidedly captivating and cutting-edge.

FASHION DIGITAL NIGHT
“Fashion Digital Night” is arrived at its second edition. Organized by Fondazione Mondo Digitale in collaboration with Altaroma and many new realities of digital fashion, the collective fashion show seen during the Rome Fashion Week is the result of the accurate selection of “Digital Made for Young Fashion Talents”, an online contest for wearable technology designers. Another important occasion for designers who want to experiment with new technologies and give new impulse to fashion industry.

In this evening event we’ve seen a decisive step ahead compared to the previous edition. More sophisticated was the presentation, even more innovative and interesting were the creations on catwalk and in the exhibition. Fancy geometric shapes, precise laser cuts, 3D printing for jewels and fabrics, optical fiber to light up the traditional lace, bio materials and smart devices that look to the future of fashion.
